Victoria Police Detective Inspector Mark Burnett said this is the “biggest seizure” the arson explosive squad has undertaken.

Police said it has seized five tonnes of commercial grade fireworks during the operation which was more than a year in the making.

Arson detectives arrested a 55-year-old man at a Meadow Heights home who they allege supplied a criminal syndicate with the explosives.

His co-accused include a 38-year-old man, who was allegedly found with guns, drugs, cash, stolen goods and more than 100kg of fireworks, as well as two other men from Dallas and Craigieburn.

Police allege members of the syndicate created fake profiles and advertised the pyrotechnics on social media.

Burnett said the use of fireworks can result in tragedy if they are in the wrong hands.

“It presents a huge risk of serious injury or even death if the fireworks were to be ignited and it misfired,” he said.

Those smuggling forbidden fireworks in Victoria can face up to 15 years in prison or thousands of dollars in fines.
