A beloved puppy has been found dead in the backyard of a family home in Melbourne's west.

Police believe an unknown person gained access to the rear yard of a property on Station Street in Lalor between 9.30am and 10.30pm on September 30.

CCTV cameras in the backyard were moved, before police allege one of the puppies at the property was killed.

Three-month-old staffy, named "Boss", was found dead after suffering injuries.

Police believe the incident was a targeted attack.
