Perth’s beloved Christmas tree at Lake Monger Drive, a beloved tradition since 1995, is facing an uncertain future after a local councillor raised concerns about its environmental impact.

Town of Cambridge Councillor Gavin Foley put forward a motion on Tuesday to stop the lights from going up, citing unnecessary energy consumption and potential harm to the environment.

“Anybody that puts multiple coloured lights on a tree and plugs it into the power at home, that’s fossil-fuelled, is adding to the problem,” Foley said.

He also criticised the financial cost, saying the nearly $27,000 spent on the decorations could be better spent.

The tree has suffered damage because of the lights, with council choosing to use a neighbouring tree this December instead.

A vote on the fate of this year’s display will be held next Tuesday.
