A basketball coach who had dreams to play in the NBA has been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl he met through the social media app Snapchat.

Alieu Sheriff, 28, appeared before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday charged with three counts each of rape and using internet to procure child and two counts each of possessing child exploitation material and indecent treatment of children.

Police will allege Sheriff contacted a 14-year-old girl on Snapchat telling her he was 18, the Courier-Mail reported.

Sheriff allegedly picked the girl up south of Brisbane in his car and raped her, during which she told him to stop, and recorded videos on his phone.

Police raided his home in Slacks Creek, 24km south of Brisbane, on Thursday and seized electronic devices.

The devices allegedly contained videos of the teenager performing sex acts, which amounted to possession of child exploitation material.

Sheriff said he had consensual sex with the girl and that she told him she was 16 and that she did not tell him to stop.

Sheriff was born in Liberia and came to Australia as a refugee with his family in 2003.

He got a scholarship to play basketball in America and told the ABC in 2020 that his ‘ultimate goal’ was to play in the NBA.

Magistrate Belinda Merrin granted Sheriff bail with the conditions he lived at his Slacks Creek home and not contact the alleged victim.

The case will return to court on June 10.
