An Australian woman has been killed and her daughter injured in Sri Lanka after the hired taxi they were travelling in crashed.

The tourist is believed to be a 67-year-old Sydney woman of Fijian-Indian origin.

According to local media reports, the car plunged from a cliff at Dara Wanguwa in Hemmathagama, around 100 kilometres north-east of the capital Colombo.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is providing assistance to the family.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family,” a spokesperson said.

“Consular officials from the High Commission in Colombo are supporting another Australian woman who was injured in the accident.”
