Australia Post is rolling out a new service ahead of the Christmas shopping peak aimed at making it easier for people to collect undelivered parcels.
When the postal service is unable to safely deliver a parcel to a customer’s address and cannot return it to the nearest post office during opening hours, they will place the parcel in a free Australia Post parcel locker.
The locker will be within a kilometre of the customer’s address and open all hours.
Customers with the Australia Post MyPost account will be notified through the AusPost app or SMS that their parcel is in a locker near their home, ready for them to collect over the next 48 hours.
There are more than 700 parcel lockers installed across Australia and locations include train and petrol stations.
Customers wanting to register for a free parcel locker can do so via the AusPost app on the Apple Store or Google Play.

Australia Post said today the service aims to make parcel collection more convenient for people ahead of forecast rises in online shopping ahead of Christmas.
“Collecting missed deliveries from nearby parcel lockers means customers who aren’t home for their delivery and can’t make it to the post office can still collect their parcels via our parcel locker network,” said executive general manager of parcel, post and ecommerce services Gary Star.
To give Christmas parcels the best chance of arriving on time, Australia Post said parcels should be sent by December 18 for most destinations within Australia.
If you’re sending them by Express Post, you need to have them mailed them by December 21.
People sending to or from Western Australia and Northern Territory should allow a few extra days.
