Ski enthusiasts are enjoying the best July snow depth since 2021, as families make the most of the school holidays on slopes across the alpine region.

Alpine regions have experienced light snowfall this week, with ski resorts waking up to as much as 4cm of fresh snow this morning.

But an icy front last weekend blanketed alpine regions with up to 40cm of snow, making for deep snowpack across the region.

At Spencers Creek, roughly halfway between Perisher and Thredbo resorts, snow depth reached around 160cm today.

That compares to a July peak of 124.6cm last year and 131cm the year before.

In Victoria, snow guns are firing at Falls Creek, which is operating with an average snow depth of 94cm.

Families hitting the slopes at Mt Buller can enjoy 54cm of natural snow, coupled with 93cm man made snow, after 3cm fell overnight.

The snow depth at Mt Hotham is a healthy 92cm.

Further north, Thredbo skiers are enjoying a bluebird day with a natural depth of 80cm.

At Perisher, the mercury dipped to -6 degrees overnight, where the snowpack is up to 160cm deep.

A cold front missed the mainland this week, but brought frosty conditions and snow at low elevations in Tasmania.

The icy system is expected to continue for Tasmania into the weekend, with snowfall as a low as 500m expected by Sunday, according to Weatherzone.

When it comes to the mainland, temperatures next week will be slightly warmer in the highlands, but snow could be on the cards next weekend, with early indications of a strong, icy system.
