Western Australian Matthew Borromei lost control of his scooter and crashed into a cement pillar in the Sicilian town of Taormina on Wednesday, local media reported.
Local media reported Borromei died before emergency services arrived at the scene.
His family confirmed the death in a social media post saying the 25-year-old had died in one of “favourite places he discovered on his European travels”.
“Miss you. Forever in our hearts and thoughts,” the post said.
Tributes have erupted for the 25-year-old described as man with a “zest for life”.

“Sadly Matt lost his life while touring in Italy and he will be greatly missed by many for his energy, smile,” local football team Railways Football Club Kalgoorlie wrote on Facebook.
“This is a very difficult write with Matt so loved by all and words genuinely fail in this moment.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said it is providing consular assistance to Borromei’s family.
“We send our deepest condolences to the man’s family,” the spokesperson said.
