Hundreds of locals and surfers lined the sand at Cronulla to see the 40-year-old break the record at 7:11am AEDT this morning with a session lasting more than 30 hours and 11 minutes.
But the surf school owner isn’t finished yet – he plans to stay in the water until 5pm today to set a new record of 40 hours.
Johnston is raising money for the Chumpy Pullin Foundation and youth mental health, and has raised more than $200,000 so far.

The team behind him say blindness, infected ears, dehydration, sleep deprivation, hypothermia, sharks, drowning are all factors in his record-breaking attempt.
“I thought, I could just do it. I can run for forty hours,” says Johnston.
“But, this way, I can surf with people, bring in the community and make a difference for the future.”
