One of Australia’s richest businessmen has reportedly split from his wife

Sources close to the family of Mike Cannon-Brookes, co-founder of Atlassian, have confirmed he is separating from his wife Annie, according to the Australian Financial Review.

Mr Cannon-Brookes, who has a fortune of around $19 billion this year according to the Financial Review Rich List, had married his wife in 2010.

The separation follows the high-profile split of Fortescue Metals executive chairman Andrew Forrest and Nicola Forrest.

The billionaire couple, who had been married for 31 years, said last week they will now be living apart, but insisted it won’t affect the direction of their mining empire or philanthropic interests.

The Australian Financial Review’s annual Rich List for 2023 revealed in May that Cannon-Brookes and his business partner, Scott Farquhar, had lost more than seven billion each since 2022.

Mining magnates Gina Rinehart ($37.41b) and Mr Forrest ($33.29b) topped the list.

Also in May, Mr Cannon-Brookes prevailed over Mr Forrest in a battle for the control of Sun Cable, an ambitious development promising to transmit solar-generated electricity from the Northern Territory outback to Singapore.

The Cannon-Brookes family own a large property portfolio, including the 1.1 hectare Fairwater estate, the home of the late Lady Mary Fairfax, which they acquired in 2018 for $100 million.

In June, Cannon-Brookes and his wife forked out $14.25million to buy a home in Newport, on Sydney’s northern beaches, neighbouring the $24.5million estate they purchased in 2020.

Mr Cannon-Brookes, who was previously a fashion designer, was born in the United States. His father was an international banker.

It was previously reported the couple met at a Qantas lounge during a trip between Sydney and San Francisco.
