Security cameras have captured the horrifying moment arsonists set fire to a home in Perth while a family-of-three were sleeping inside.

The fire broke out in a carport on Fitzgerald Road, Morley, in Perth’s north-east, around 4am on Wednesday, with firefighters arriving at the scene soon after.

It is understood the occupants of the home – two adults and a child – were able to get out of the house safely.

CCTV footage from next door shows two people lighting a broom on fire before throwing it into the carport.

The pair can then be seen running away as the carport lights up in flames and smoke wafts outwards.

It is understood most of the damage was contained to the carport and the front part of the home.

Police were called to the residence around 5.15am and deemed the fire suspicious.

They have cordoned off the area while carrying out an investigation into the incident.

Det. Sgt Chris De Bruin said the arson squad was in the early stages of its investigation.

‘We are treating it as a deliberately lit fire,’ he told The West Australian.

‘We have CCTV footage showing the possible offenders walking down the side of the house, indicating something has happened.

‘There is quite significant damage, mostly to the roof area.’

Neighbours said they heard banging around 4am before noticing the carport of the home was up in flames.

Neighbour Udom Quartermaine said he initially thought the sound was gunshots.

‘I heard two bangs initially, so I was hesitant to look outside at first — I looked out my window and saw flames coming from the garage of the house,’ he told The West Australian.

‘People were just screaming fire and asking if everyone was out’.

Another neighbour said they ‘saw smoke when I looked out the window’ and had ‘grabbed the kids and ran outside’.

Roadworks between Coston Place and Weld Square on Fitzgerald Road have been set up to slow down traffic.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
