An armed man has been shot dead by police after an incident in Townsville, Queensland.

Officers were called to McKinley Street and The Strand in North Ward about 9.50am today over reports that a man was armed with a machete and knife.

Police said the armed man approached officers and was shot in the chest.

Police said medical assistance was given, but the man had died. 

No officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

The Ethical Standards Command, with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission, will investigate the incident.
