A plane packed with dozens of passengers has caught on fire on the tarmac of a busy airport while preparing to take off.

Emergency services were called to Moranbah Airport in central Queensland around 6.20pm on Wednesday night after initial reports a plane on the tarmac was alight.

The fire was extinguished before firefighters arrived.

Around 77 passengers were on board the Alliance Airlines plane that was preparing to take off headed for Brisbane.

No one was injured.

Everyone on board exited the plane safety and the flight was cancelled.

It’s suspected the blaze was sparked by a fuel leak onto the exhaust.

‘We monitored inside the plane and left it in the hands with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau,’ a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said.

Passengers recalled seeing smoke come out of one of the plane’s engines.

‘So we finish the week away at work with a bit of drama,’ one man posted online.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation.

More to come.
