An alleged online scammer has been charged by Victoria police after evading authorities for over ten years.

Police say the alleged scammer contacted people online who were looking for rental properties, and then offered a property to them, before asking them to provide rent and bond payments to secure the property.

He then allegedly cut off all contact with them once the bond and rent were paid to him.

Police say he has been running this alleged scam since 2011.

The 38-year-old man was arrested on a Caufield property, in Melbourne after hiding from police for more than ten years.

The alleged scammer was wanted on multiple arrest warrants and was charged with several counts of obtaining property by deception and obtaining a financial advantage by deception.

The man was also charged with eight incidents of alleged fraud and resisting arrest.

He has been remanded and will face Melbourne Magistrates’ court on April 20.
