Fears are growing for experienced bushwalker Alistair Thomson who was last heard from more than a week ago

Fears are growing for an experienced bushwalker who was last heard from more than a week ago as he trekked through remote Central Australia.

Alistair Thomson, 63, was taking on the Larapinta Trail solo, heading towards Alice Springs from about 240km west of the town, NT Police said.

The hiker, from Victoria, had plenty of food and water with him when he last contacted friends and family via text message on May 21.

Mr Thomson, 63, was taking on the Larapinta Trail solo

Mr Thomson, 63, was taking on the Larapinta Trail solo

He was planning to have reached Hugh Gorge by May 22 but has not been heard from since and has not returned to his hotel.

Police, the Larapinta Trail Trek Support Team and local rangers are now searching for Mr Thomson.

He is 6ft tallm white and has light brown hair which is greying. He was wearing a blue broadbrimmed hat.
