A two-month-old boy has died at a home after being found unresponsive by emergency services.

The baby boy was found at property on Swamp Gum Place at Alfredton, west of Ballarat, in Victoria, at about 9pm on Saturday.

Emergency services performed CPR on the infant but he died at the scene.

One neighbour told Daily Mail Australia a woman dressed in light pants and a black crop top allegedly handed the unconscious baby to a neighbour before she ran off into the night.

He said she started frantically knocking on doors asking if someone could call her a taxi.

When concerned residents asked whether they should call the police, he said she would run away.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police told Daily Mail Australia they are ‘yet to determine the circumstances surrounding the death’.

Victoria Police shut down the street as detectives launched an investigation into the incident.

Officers will await the result of a post mortem to determine the cause of the death.
