An Adelaide couple has unexpectedly welcomed their first child on a leap day, the same as their father who was also born on February 29.

Baby Hugh arrived at 9.04am on this rare day, three weeks before his due date.

“I still don’t believe he’s here, he’s here today,” father Danny Nguyen said.

“Life is unexpected and everything that’s come, we’re happy with it.”

“I’m so happy,” mum Alex Luong said.

An Adelaide University mathematician has crunched the numbers and the chances of both Hugh and his father being born on February 29 is one in 2.2 million.

The father and son were also born in the year of the dragon which is less than one in 300 million.

“It’s very amazing, I didn’t think of it that way,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen and Luong met in Adelaide eight years ago after they both moved from Vietnam.

“I said, ‘Oh I don’t have a present for you on the 29th this year but the baby is coming’,” Luong said.

“He said it’s a big present.”
