'Active shooter' sparks lockdown at Mississippi Air Force base

A Mississippi Air Force base has been placed on lockdown amid reports of an active shooter.

Keesler Air Force Base issued an alert stating it is in ‘lockdown mode’ at around 9.30am ET on Wednesday.

The military base was due to conduct a readiness drill today, but the incident is not connected to the plans, WLOX reports.

The Biloxi Police Department told the outlet there were reports of an active shooter, but that no evidence has been found yet.

Keesler AFB issued a statement confirming that the incident is ‘real world’.

‘Avoid the following areas: NORTH of the hairpin on Ploesti Dr and anything NORTH of Meadows Dr. These areas remain on lockdown!’ officials wrote.

The base is located in Biloxi on the Gulf Coast, around 168 miles south east of Jackson, the state’s capital. 

There are approximately 5,100 active duty military, 1,625 civil service employees, 13,000 retirees, 4,763 family members and 2,700 contractors on Keesler AFB, according to the base.
