Two Gold Coast locals have had a shock after finding a freshwater crocodile on the road in the nearby hinterland.

Zane Hemmings from Austinville said he was in “absolute disbelief” when he saw the reptile just south of Mudgreeba, while taknig mate Lachlan Sainsbury home.

He said he saw the freshwater croc on the road and went back to investigate.

He then retrieved the crocodile before calling authorities.

Wildlife officers arrived to collect the creature.

Department of Environment is now investigating the incident.

They said it’s believed to be an escaped pet or to have been illegally taken from the wild – which could carry a $16,000 fine.
