Aaron Rodgers will talk with Joe Namath about wearing No. 12 for Jets

Aaron Rodgers may have told ESPN’s Adam Schefter to lose his number, but the soon-to-be Jets quarterback will wait to ask Joe Namath for his.

In January, the Jets QB legend said he’d be want Rodgers to wear his No. 12 — retired by the franchise in 1985 — if he came to New York.

On Wednesday, Rodgers said he intends to play for the Jets and would be open to having that talk with Namath — but not quite yet.

“With respect to the emotions, I think there’ll be time for all those conversations down the road,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Rodgers has worn No. 12 for the Packers since entering the league in 2005.

Namath, a self-proclaimed “big Rodgers fan,” felt he could use the digit to entice Rodgers to come to Gang Green long before the rumor mill reached its apex.

“Well, it’s on ownership,” the 79-year-old told WFAN’s “Tiki & Tierney” on Jan. 19. “It’s different ownership. Different people. And I’d sure love Rodgers if he’s there. Yeah, I want him to wear his number. We established ourselves and we’ve got a real respect for our numbers, and Aaron Rodgers, God almighty, yeah!

“It’d be great to have him in New York.”

There is hope that Rodgers, 39, will be the first QB to lead the Jets to a Super Bowl since Namath did in Super Bowl 3, back in 1969.

It remains the franchise’s only championship.

“I want the Jets to win,” Namath said.

There will be plenty of pieces in place for Rodgers to lead the Jets to the promised land after a strong start to the season was derailed by injuries and poor play under center.

“I think we’re pretty good on both sides of the ball if Lady Luck doesn’t knock us out like it did this year with the offensive line and the running back, and we stay healthy,” Namath said. “We need a trigger guy.”

It seems Namath and the Jets are that much closer to getting their man.

First, however, the trade with Green Bay needs to be completed — and a conversation with a Jets franchise legend can take place.
