A rogues’ gallery of speed-demon city politicians

Who is the worst road-rule-breaker in city government?

The competition is pretty stiff.

City Comptroller Brad Lander, running for mayor in part on vows to end “traffic violence,” racked up eight school-zone speeding tickets over the course of five years and then lied about paying his tickets off on time.

Is it something about the comptroller’s job?

City Councilman Justin Brannan, now seeking that position, has a total of 16 school-zone tickets.

Edging him out is Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers, who chairs the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, with 17 school-zone tix.

Maybe the champ is Jumaane Williams, now running for re-election as public advocate: He’s got a whopping 28 tickets, though only one in a school zone.

Or perhaps it’s Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, who ties Brannan with 16 school-zone tix.

Traffic-safety advocates argue that just six violations should count as a felony; that rule would imply hard time for all these “public servants,” and perhaps more that we haven’t heard about.

Makes the change seem pretty attractive, doesn’t it?
