‘A Haunting in Venice’ frightened the competition on its opening night

“A Haunting in Venice” managed to scare away its competition.

The third film in the murder mystery series produced and written by Kenneth Branagh took in $5.5 million on its opening night Friday, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo.

The supernatural mystery, which The Post called a “surefooted film with strong performances and a luxurious-yet-frightful tone,” is based on a 1969 Agatha Christie novel.

“The Nun II,” which was in first place last week, moved down a notch to the No. 2 spot, with earnings of $4.4 million.

The gothic supernatural horror, which opened on Sept. 8, took in $88 million worldwide during its opening weekend.

Spy thriller “The Equalizer 3” remained in third place, with a $2.1 million take. The flick — whose budget was estimated to be around $70 million — surpassed $100 million at the worldwide box office in its second weekend in theaters, Screenrant reported.

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” which was in second place last week, landed in fourth with sales of nearly $1.4 million. Variety called Nia Vardalos’ third installment of the cultural comedy “a disjointed mashup of half-baked storylines.”

The summer’s mega blockbuster “Barbie,” which was in fourth last week, fell to fifth, with $1 million in sales.
