76ers lose Tyrese Maxey to injury as miserable start gets worse

The 76ers’ nightmare 2024-25 season keeps getting worse.

All-Star Tyrese Maxey is expected to be sidelined for several weeks due to a right hamstring injury, according to ESPN.

The 76ers will take the “careful” approach and have a better understanding after an evaluation later Thursday, per the report.

The former Kentucky star exited the 76ers’ last game against the Clippers with right hamstring soreness and played a season-low 32 minutes in the 110-98 setback.

Philadelphia entered this season with championship aspirations but at 1-6 is tied for the worst record in the league in a stunning development.

Losing Maxey will not help since he’s one of the team’s best players and is averaging a career-best 27.6 points per game, while playing a league-high 39.7 minutes per game.

Maxey has been forced to stay on the court due to fellow “big three” members Joel Embiid and Paul George combining for two games so far, both from George.

Embiid’s absence has raised eyebrows since he participated in the Summer Olympics and the team has been rather cryptic about why he has not played.

Along the way, Embiid earned himself a three-game suspension for assaulting a reporter in the locker room.

He’s now scheduled to debut Tuesday against the Knicks in Philadelphia.

George, the 76ers’ prized offseason acquisition, made his season debut just two games ago after suffering a bone bruise in his left knee during the preseason.

He has tallied 33 points and 12 rebounds total in his first two games.

Maxey’s injury means the 76ers are set to go more than a month and potentially closer to two without having their three best players on the court at the same time.

The 76ers aim to end a four-game losing streak Sunday when they visit LeBron James and the Lakers, whose coach J.J. Redick questioned his team’s effort after a loss Wednesday to the Grizzlies.
