49ers star Trent Williams finalizing deal in time for Jets showdown

The San Francisco 49ers are backing up the truck ahead of their highly anticipated season opener against the Jets.

After re-signing holdout Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers are on the verge of bringing back stud left tackle Trent Williams, as their cornerstone lineman returned to San Francisco to sign his new contract, his agency, Elite Loyalty Sports, confirmed Tuesday on social media.

Williams was also seen in a video posted by his brother, Fred Williams, preparing to board a private jet and head to training camp.

Aiyuk, who had his boots dug in on a holdout himself, previously re-signed with a four-year, $120 million contract, and now Williams figures to again be one the highest-paid left tackles in the NFL.

The 49ers’ ability to finalize contracts with Aiyuk and Williams is a major boon for the defending NFC champions as the squad prepares to play host to Aaron Rodgers and the Jets on “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 9.

Williams, 36, signed a six-year, $138 million contract in 2021, making him the highest-paid left tackle in NFL history.

He’s since been relegated to the sixth-highest salary in the league while making the Pro Bowl in three consecutive seasons as the blindside blocker for Jimmy Garoppolo and now Brock Purdy.

San Francisco has enjoyed significant success thanks to Williams, including a wild 6.05 yards per carry when rushing behind Williams. The 49ers average just 4.45 yards per carry on all other running plays.

In another piece of positive news for San Francisco, ESPN reported star running back Christian McCaffrey is now expected to return to practice on Tuesday.

With Williams and Aiyuk’s return to the team, the 49ers moved from 3.5-point favorites to four-point favorites on DraftKings.
