4 hurt in hit-and-run outside Guaranteed Rate Field

CHICAGO (WLS) — Four people were struck by a hit-and-run driver outside Guaranteed Rate Field Tuesday evening, Chicago officials said.

Chicago police said the four pedestrians were struck by a car traveling at a high rate of speed on 35th Street at Shields, outside the baseball stadium just before the White Sox game started.

Three of the four victims were administered first aid at the scene immediately by police on site at the stadium.

“They were all on the ground. One was half on the ground half on the sidewalk the other ones were on the sidewalk,” said a witness who asked to remain anonymous.

The fourth victim, when struck by the car, was flipped up into the air and over the front of the car and actually fell into the interior of the car through the sunroof, police said. That victim remained in the car as it fled southbound on the Dan Ryan.

Illinois State Police and CPD immediately gave chase onto the expressway. The vehicle was stopped by troopers and appeared to crash about a mile away at 47th and the Dan Ryan.

Four suspects between the ages of 20 and 25 were taken into custody and to local hospitals to be checked out. Chicago police said they remain in custody.

Police said a 51-year-old woman was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, a 25-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and a 24-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition from the scene outside Sox Park.

The fourth victim was also taken from the Dan Ryan to a local hospital in critical condition. Police have not released their age or gender.

All local southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan are blocked at 43rd street. Traffic is being diverted off the highway. Drivers should seek alternate routes.

An investigation by Major Accidents is ongoing, police said. No other suspects are being sought.

The White Sox released a statement, saying in part, “Our hearts go out to the four fans who were injured this evening, their families and friends, as well as the fans who witnessed the incident on their way to a baseball game.”
