Her final text contained just a single word, but it haunts Jean Hanlon's (pictured) family to this day. 'Help', the message read.

Villagers have formed a grunt patrol in search of a 400lb pig who has gone missing after her partner died.

Squeak, a 13-year-old sow, was mourning the loss of her companion Bubble when she fled from her home in Old Basing, near Basingstoke, on Monday morning.

Annette Carrig, Squeak’s owner, put out on social media that Squeak had scarpered and has been searching the woods around the area ‘several times a day’ to find the missing oinker.

Annette, of Eastrop, Basingstoke, rents land in Old Basing and has several rescue animals, including Squeak and Bubble, who recently passed away.

She said Squeak, who she described as the height of a German Shepherd dog but twice as wide, has made other escape bids from the pen but had always been found close by.

She said ‘We have been walking around looking all over for Squeak, but we can’t see any sign or trace of her anywhere. Squeak is a rescue pig and here she is loved and looked after well.

‘We would love to be reunited so if you have any information or have seen her anywhere please get in touch. I hope she’s OK – she is a foodie and a girl that likes her veg.

‘Even if she’s succumbed to a car accident or something, it’s not like you wouldn’t notice you’d hit a pig. I just want to know where she is.’

Annette rescued Squeak in 2014 after she was discovered cruelly tied up. The pig was last spotted by a member of the public at 8.30am on Monday on Basing Road.

She has also informed the police and the RSPCA but her and her family have still not been able to find her.
