A 15-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a car on a busy road last night as a man is arrested.

The teenager died after being struck by a vehicle at 9.30pm on Heol Trelai, Caerau in Cardiff.

A 40-year-old man is being questioned by police at Cardiff Bay Police Station after he was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses and enquiries continue. Formal identification of the girl’s body is due to take place later on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: ‘Shortly after 9.30pm on Monday, May 1, we responded to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Heol Trelai, Caerau in Cardiff.

‘A 15-year-old girl was declared dead at the scene.

‘A 40-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been taken to Cardiff Bay Police Station.

‘Our thoughts are with the girl’s family at this time. Investigations into the collision continue.’

The road was closed for hours overnight and reopened at around 6am on Tuesday. 

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called shortly after 21:30 yesterday evening [May 1] , to a road traffic accident on Heol Trelai in Cardiff. 

‘We deployed a rapid response vehicle, an emergency ambulance and were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service along with pre-hospital immediate care specialists from MEDSERVE Wales.’
