A Scottish man has been found dead on holiday in Lanzarote after failing to board a flight home with his friend.

Robert Campbell, 44, had been enjoying his first ever holiday abroad on the Canary island when he vanished after being due to fly back home on Thursday last week, May 11.

Shortly before the flight, Campbell became unwell and was taken to hospital. But after being examined, the Scot was deemed well enough to fly back home.

Campbell then became separated from his friend Paddy at the airport shortly before the flight and was unable to be contacted, it was reported.

Fearing for their loved one, Campbell’s family issued appeals to help locate him as two of them flew out to the island’s capital Las Palmas to find the Scot.

His sister, Margueritte Devine, later confirmed the tragic news that her brother was found dead on Tuesday.

The family have now launched a GoFundMe page to help cover some of the costs to bring Campbell back to his home in Uddington, in South Lanarkshire, and pay for his funeral.

Margueritte wrote: ‘Sadly our brother died in Lanzarote yesterday and we’re left with a bill of 6 and 10 thousand pounds in funeral fees.

‘We are desperate to get him home asap so I am writing this to reach out from my heart to help us bring him home.’

Tributes have been paid to the Scot on social media with friends and family calling him ‘one of the best’.

One user, sharing the GoFundMe page, wrote: ‘Could everyone please share this and help us get our (uncle Rab) Robert Campbell home Asap where he belongs.’

She added: ‘And a massive thank you to each and everyone who took there time to share his post about him being missing and help us find him.

‘One of our family members and friends flew over to Lanzarote to find him and bring him home but unfortunately they where sadly too late so we are all heartbroken and devastated and shocked as this wasn’t the outcome we all were hoping for.’
