An historic manor bought by a giant housebuilder has been left derelict for several years while hundreds of new homes surround it.
St Julian’s Manor is a Grade II listed building but is currently boarded up and fenced off, with the brand new St Edeyrn’s housing development near Cardiff being built around it.
Owned by Persimmon Homes, the historic building has a plaque dated 1649 but has been boarded up for several years.
The old farmhouse lies within the St Edeyrn’s area where more than 1,000 new homes are set to be developed by Persimmon, as well as a district centre, school, community facility, and orchards or allotment.
Planning permission has now been granted to construct seven new houses on land next to the farmhouse, WalesOnline reports.

Persimmon bought St Julian’s but does not intend to restore or develop the site themselves.
According to local media reports, local residents have expressed concern after vandals broke into the property.
‘The proposals will provide an opportunity for a new owner of the manor to create a family home on a sizeable plot, sensitively separated from the surrounding new development, yet within reach of its facility,’ a heritage statement, submitted along with the builder’s planning application, reads.
However, the builder intends to provide new boundaries and landscaping for the end purchaser of the farmhouse.
The building is currently boarded up and fenced off, with work to build the new developments taking place on the land to the west of the building.

Despite its listed status, the farmhouse has been boarded up for ‘several years’.
‘Externally, it is in a poor state of repair and has suffered in the last few years since being vacated,’ according to the heritage impact statement. At the time the building was surveyed, it states, an interior inspection wasn’t possible due to safety measures.
While it was previously surrounded by fields, the development of St Edeyrn’s has seen new builds quickly go up around it.

The seven houses are set to be built to the west of the house along the spinal road, keeping the listed building and its garden in tact.
St Edeyrn’s Village has been built on a site next to Cardiff Gate Retail and Business Parks in the north-east of Cardiff, with construction starting in April 2016.
Work began on the new £6 million St Edeyrn’s primary school in March last year. It will be the new home for St Mellons Church in Wales Primary School, which will relocate from Llanrumney.
The development of the 1,020 homes took over what was mainly fields, forming part of the Cardiff County Council’s local development plan (LDP).
The development gets its name from the 6th-century monk St Edeyrn, who also gives his name to the nearby parish church – also a Grade II listed building.
A spokesman for Persimmon East Wales said St Julian’s Manor requires specialist contractors to renovate it.
He added: ‘[It] will be marketed later this year with the aim of finding a partner to return the property to its former glory.
‘It will be an exciting opportunity for a new owner to create a family home on a sizeable plot, sensitively separated from the surrounding new development, yet within reach of the quality new facilities and amenities at St Edeyrn’s Village.’
