The Independent Police Service is investigating reports of a shooting being heard at the Independence Centre shopping centre, following a police response on Monday afternoon. Police were dispatched to the mall around 3 p.m. Police spokesman Constable Jack Taylor told The Star by phone on Monday afternoon that there were reports of shootings. Members of the Missouri Highway Patrol also responded to the call, Taylor said.
Taylor said there were no known injuries related to the incident as of 3:30 p.m., although authorities were only just beginning to investigate what happened there. In a statement on social media, police said they were working with mall management to clear the building. A mall security was contacted by phone at 3.40pm, saying the incident was continuing.
The Indie Mall in Wilmington is partnering with food banks in central and eastern North Carolina to host a food event Saturday.
The Back to School Weekend Power Pack will be held at 3500 Oleander Drive from 12:00pm to 5:00pm.
Organisers say donations are needed to fill backpacks that students can take home on weekends to avoid starvation.
You can send donations at the main entrance of the mall or at the red school building in Central Court.
Backpacks are assembled by volunteers and delivered to school partners weekly.
Volunteers say packages are usually distributed on Thursday or Friday, and the children are returned on Wednesday of the following week.
The most requested items include individual pasta, sausages, dried fruit, soup, beef jerky, etc.
