World War II (WWII/WW2) was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved the vast majority of the world’s countries—including all of the great powers—forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis powers.
About 70 million people fought in World War II and only 16 million of them survived the war. Over 160,000 of them are currently serving in the United States.
Only people who are (or were) the last surviving member of a notable group of veterans are listed and recognized.
