Three people have been hurt after a huge marquee collapsed in a park, leaving victims screaming in pain.

The terrifying incident took place at about 9am this morning when the 50 metre structure came crashing down in Mayflower Park, Southampton, Hampshire.

One eyewitness described hearing a ‘man’s screams for help’ after the marquee ‘suddenly’ collapsed with a loud ‘bang’.

‘Several workers ran out of the way,’ the witness told Southampton’s Daily Echo newspaper.

‘Then I saw a man lying on his side crying out and several people ran over.’

Three people were hurt when the marquee collapsed as technicians were working to dismantle it.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service added: ‘Two of those patients were treated and discharged at the scene and the third was taken to University Hospital Southampton for further treatment.’

Firefighters provided immediate care to the casualties before they were handed over to paramedics.

No-one was trapped under the structure when it fell.

The marquee, called Alu Hall, is owned by contractors Neptunus.

The temporary structure is believed to be left over from the recent Seawork marine and workboat exhibition held at the site, reported Portsmouth’s daily paper, The News.

The cause of the collapse is unclear but  Neptunus has reportedly launched an investigation into the incident.
