A foot inside a shoe has washed up on a popular New Zealand beach.
A passer-by made the horrifying discovery at Petone Beach, in Wellington, at about 8am local time on Saturday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Williamson said while police were in the early stages of the investigation, it was not being treated as a homicide.
A land and water search of the area near where the foot was spotted was carried out but nothing further was found.

‘Formal identification of the foot will take place in due course,’ Detective Senior Sergeant Williamson said.
Petone Beach is a popular swimming spot for locals and tourists.
