A farm worker has died after being crushed by hay bales on an Australian property.

Paramedics were called to Long Gully Road, Greendale an hour west of Melbourne about 4pm to treat a man, 64, who was injured while working.

It is understood he was badly hurt after hay bales, which can weigh up to 700kg each, fell on him. 

He later died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the freak accident.

Victorian police remain on the scene, although the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious, 9News reported.

Police will now prepare a report for the coroner.
