CCTV footage shows a figure on a motorised bike leaving the scene where Sydney nurse Erin Gilbert was brutally stabbed to death

Police believe fleeting footage of a bike rider could be a major breakthrough in finding the killer of a nurse who was brutally stabbed multiple times at her home.

CCTV captured a ghostly image of a figure on a motorised bicycle leaving the Merrylands unit in western Sydney where Erin Gilbert, 42, was found by her husband sprawled on the living room floor choking on her own blood.

Nicholas Gilbert called paramedics at around 11.30pm on Easter Sunday as he frantically tried to save Erin’s life but she died before paramedics arrived.

There was no sign of the attacker or the murder weapon weapon with investigators hoping the new footage could be an important lead in the baffling mystery.

Officers have been meticulously searching along the path the bike was taking, in the hunt for a discarded blade.

Police rifled through garbage, inspecting vehicles and inside drains as investigations into the ‘suspicious’ death continue.

Police video footage provided to Daily Mail Australia shows officers meticulously scouring the neighbourhood, including public parklands.

Strike Force Trevelyan has been established to investigate the mysterious details surrounding Ms Gilbert’s tragic death.

On Thursday, Daily Mail Australia revealed the couple, who got married in 2020, were desperately trying to have a baby.

Ms Gilbert’s childhood best friend Shane Niquet said she had recently quit smoking to improve her chances of falling pregnant.

‘Erin had so many plans for her future,’ Mr Niquet told Daily Mail Australia.

‘She just gave up smoking so she could start IVF again – she wanted a baby more then anything.’

Mr Niquet said he and Ms Gilbert had been ‘inseparable’ since they met in Year 7.

He remembered her as a ‘strong-willed person’ who always had a smile on her face and ‘tried to find the good’ in everyone.

‘I don’t know how I’m going to go without her. I spoke to her all the time I will miss her greatly,’ he said.

Mr Niquet also explained Ms Gilbert was a qualified nurse and pathologist but was in-between jobs when she died.

Court documents revealed the Gilberts were struggling financially and had legal battles with two landlords over unpaid rent.

Two court orders from the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal direct the Gilberts to pay more than a total $8850 in overdue rent to their landlords.

In October, the couple were evicted from their home on Victoria Road in Parramatta after they breached their tenancy agreement by failing to pay more than $7780 in rent.

Only a few months later, the Gilberts were ordered to pay the outstanding rent of more than $1060 on their current home in Merrylands.

Ms Gilbert was found dead in that apartment only days after the court mandate was handed down.

She and her husband had been facing eviction by July if they didn’t meet their rental repayments.

Mr Gilbert broke down on Wednesday while telling Nine News his wife was his ‘better half’ and his ‘world’.

‘She just completed me, everything about her I miss,’ he said.

Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Trevelyan investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
