Devon Stanaford, 74, of Powellton passed away on June 4, 2022.
He was born in Powellton on April 19, 1948, to the late Dana and Mable Sullivan Belcher.
He is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
His children are Tameria Middleton of Mebane, NC, Debbie Terrell of Mt. Carbon, and Brian Belcher of Hall River, NC; six grandchildren, Hope Middleton (with the Lord), Heather Middleton, Jordan Terrell, Hannah Terrell, Colton Belcher and Katelyn Belcher; wife and best friend Elaine Belcher; sisters Joan Dorsey and Judy Sigman.
The ceremony took place on July 12 at the O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery and was officiated by Pastor Terrance Hamm. The U.S. Army and the U.S. 93rd Regiment were buried with military honors at the Kanawa Valley Memorial Gardens in Glasgow.
Basil (Jack) Bennett was born to Lunda Paul and Hazel Saunders Bennett on September 23, 1942 in Cunard. A woman at his birth exclaimed, “Oh, look at little Jimmy Jack,” so his nickname stayed with him until elementary school. It wasn’t until junior high school that he discovered that his real name was Basil.
Basil F. Bennett of Crossville, Tennessee, who lived in Oak Hills and Charleston, died on April 14, 2022, after a long illness.
Basil is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He enjoys serving as a deacon, helping where needed, and serving on mission school boards. While he can’t fit a tune in a barrel, he enjoys singing with his church family. He looked forward to singing, “raised the trumpet and blew it loud. When he was able to get back to church, Jesus came again.
After serving in the Navy for four years in the 1960s, Basil returned to civilian life and began working in office equipment. Eventually he became the owner of an office equipment supply company. Despite only having a high school diploma (and many trade school degrees), he was a very successful businessman. He also owns several properties in Huntington as well as his office equipment business.
Basil is an avid golfer who also enjoys hunting, fishing and traveling. After retirement, he enjoys walking his dog Romeo and visiting neighbors. He turned into a sociable butterfly in Hunter Bay.
Before Basil’s death, his grandparents were Basil and Dimi Simmons Bennett, and Franklin and Heidi McDaniel Sanders. His parents, Paul and Hazel Saunders Bennett; his sister, Joan Travis; and his first wife, Caroline the painter Bennett.
Basil’s second wife, Nancy Rebecca (Becky) Bennett, survived. Daughter, Jacqueline Bennet, Ph.D. (husband, Rex Wolfe), Onenato, NY; Two grandchildren of Onenato, Jacson and Jarad Wolfe; Sister Deanna Nicosia, Bompass, VA (husband Russell ); brother Paul Bennett (wife Cathy) of Port St. Joe, Florida; sister, Anna Bennett of Oak Hill; and 11 nieces and nephews.
Basil was selected for cremation by the Neptune Society. A memorial service was held on June 5 at Crossville Seventh-day Adventist Church in Crossville, Tennessee.
