A bomb squad was called to a major city hospital after a suspicious package was found.

Specialist teams were called to the Alfred Hospital about 7am on Sunday after reports of a ‘suspicious package’, Victoria Police said.

Police cordoned off streets surrounding the hospital as a precaution.

The package was reportedly taken to a nearby oval where specialist officers investigated it.

The area was declared safe at 10am. 

‘Emergency services were called to a hospital on Commercial Road, Melbourne to conduct a safety check following reports of a suspicious package just before 7am,’ a police statement said.

‘The Bomb Response Unit attended the scene and determined the package was not explosive.

‘The scene has been declared safe.’
