Biography of Zac Goldsmith

Born on January 20, 1975, Goldsmith comes from the illustrious Goldschmidt family, known for its involvement in politics and business.

Goldsmith’s early education was at esteemed institutions, including King’s House School, The Mall School, Hawtreys School and Eton College. However, his time at Eton was cut short when he was expelled after drugs were found in his room. Reflecting on the incident, Goldsmith recognized the lessons of the experience.

His interest in environmental issues and cultural exploration led him to travel the world. Goldsmith participated in the International Honors Programme, which took him to countries as diverse as Thailand, New Zealand, Mexico, Hungary and Italy.

During his time in California, he worked for the think tank Redefining Progress and later became a researcher at Norberg-Hodge’s International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC). These experiences exposed him to different cultures and fueled his passion for environmental protection.

In 1997, Goldsmith’s uncle Edward Goldsmith appointed him as reviews editor of The Ecologist, a renowned environmental journal. A year later, he assumed the role of editor-in-chief and director and led the publication through a transformational phase. Under his leadership, The Ecologist moved from an academic journal style to a current affairs format and expanded its readership and influence.

Goldsmith’s political career took off in 2005 when he was appointed vice-chairman of the Conservative Group for Quality of Life Policy. As a co-author of the group’s report published in 2007, he made a significant contribution to shaping the Conservative Party’s environmental policy. In 2006, he was included on the conservative A-list of potential candidates.

The 2010 general election marked a milestone in Goldsmith’s political journey when he secured victory and became Member of Parliament for Richmond Park with a majority of 4,091 votes. His dedication and popularity among voters was evident when he was re-elected in 2015 with an increased majority of 23,015 votes.

In 2016, Zac Goldsmith ventured into the mayoralty of London as a Conservative candidate, with the aim of promoting his focus on the environment and local principles. Although he was unsuccessful in securing the mayoralty, his campaign attracted attention and reinforced his commitment to sustainable and community-driven politics.

Following the government’s approval of a third runway at Heathrow Airport in 2016, Goldsmith decided to stand down as an MP, prompting a by-election in the Richmond Park constituency. He was defeated as an independent candidate by Sarah Olney of the Liberal Democrats. However, Goldsmith’s political journey did not end there. When the 2017 general election was called, he was re-elected as the Conservative Party candidate for Richmond Park, winning by a narrow majority of 45 votes.

Goldsmith’s contributions were recognized when he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment and International Development in July 2019. Later that year, he was promoted to Minister of State with the right to participate in cabinet meetings, demonstrating his growing influence and commitment to environmental and international development issues.

Despite defeat in the 2019 general election, Goldsmith’s commitment to public service was recognized when Prime Minister Boris Johnson awarded him a life peerage and a seat in the House of Lords. This allowed Goldsmith to continue his ministerial duties and contribute to policy discussions at the highest level.

In February 2020, Goldsmith’s responsibilities expanded to the Pacific, highlighting his involvement in global environmental affairs. With the appointment of Liz Truss as Prime Minister in September 2022, Goldsmith’s portfolio grew further when he became Minister for Asia, Energy, Climate and Environment. His role was reaffirmed by Rishi Sunak, who appointed him with additional responsibilities for overseas territories and the Commonwealth.

In addition to his political career, Goldsmith’s family background adds to his remarkable profile. His sister Jemima Goldsmith was married to Imran Khan, former cricketer and Prime Minister of Pakistan. Their marriage further connected Goldsmith to political circles and gave him a unique perspective on international affairs.

With his liberal and libertarian views, commitment to environmentalism and extensive experience in politics and journalism, Baron Goldsmith of Richmond Park continues to leave an indelible mark on British public life. His commitment to sustainable policies and community-focused initiatives has made him a major figure in shaping the UK’s political landscape. Follow: https://mymorningtea.in/
