UEFA drops referee Szymon Marciniak from UCL final after Barcelona complaint

UEFA has removed Polish referee Szymon Marciniak from officiating the 2025 UEFA Champions League final following complaints from Barcelona regarding his performance in the semifinal second leg against Inter Milan.

Marciniak, who had been the frontrunner for the final, faced criticism over several key decisions during the match.

This included a penalty awarded against Barcelona and two potential penalty incidents that were not given.

Midfielder Pedri reportedly submitted a formal complaint to UEFA, requesting an investigation into the officiating.

In response, UEFA’s Referees Committee has appointed Romanian referee István Kovács to officiate the final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter.

Marciniak has also been left out of the officiating teams for the Europa League and Conference League finals.
