Career of Shaky Hislop

Hislop was discovered by a Reading scout at an indoor friendly against Premier League rivals Aston Villa shortly after graduation.

He later signed professional forms with Reading for the 1992–93 season and played there for two more seasons. After a rocky start, he became a firm fan favorite and won the club’s “Player of the Year” twice.

In order to play for Newcastle United, Hislop had to compete with Pavel Srenko, a rookie goalkeeper at the time.

When Newcastle blew a 12-point lead in January to finish second, Hislop, who had started the season well and was a starter until December, was injured, allowing Srnk to resume his starting position.

Hislop watched Srnek tend the nets around the same time the previous season when he was on the bench in 1996–97.

Hislop was able to regain the starting position thanks to a perceived dip in form and a few mistakes by Srenko. It was only Hislop’s second league start of the year, which came in a 7-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

As Newcastle overtook Arsenal and Liverpool into second place on goal difference at the end of the season, Hislop was able to retain his starting place.

In the previous season, West Ham United used a ‘keeper by committee’ strategy, rotating the starting position between Ludovic Miklok, Craig Forrest and Bernard Lama.

As Mikloko had already joined Queens Park Rangers and the team was unable to extend Lam’s three-month loan, Harry Redknapp grabbed Hislop and made him the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.

After Harry Redknapp was appointed as the new manager of Portsmouth, Hislop joined the team. He quickly established himself as a starter in the team that won the first league championship and earned automatic promotion to the Premier League.

He was selected in the First Division ‘Team of the Year’ in recognition of his season’s achievements, and despite competition from Harald Wapenaar and later Jamie Ashdown, held the top spot for the next two Premiership seasons.

Redknapp was replaced as manager in January 2005 and Velimir Zajec hired Greek international Konstantinos Chalkias, increasing competition for Hislop’s place in the team.

Hislop was released by the team in June 2005 after his contract expired following his failure to regain his starting position following the hiring of new manager Alain Perrin in favor of former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld.

On 29 July 2005, Hislop returned to West Ham as an experienced backup to Jimmy Walker and Jimmy Walker for newly signed Roy Carroll, allowing Stephen Bywater to go on loan.

Carroll had a solid start but Hislop featured sporadically until Christmas due to a back injury. When Carroll’s injury caused him to visit the physio again in January, Hislop returned to the lineup as a starter, alternating with Walker.

He had played in all 27 FA Cup games, recording seven shutouts as the team progressed to the match against Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard’s equalizer in the 91st minute ended the FA Cup final 3-3. Sami Hyypiä’s chance was saved by Hislop but it was not enough for Liverpool, who won the game 3-1 on penalties after Anton Ferdinand missed West Ham’s last chance of the day. Follow: https://mymorningtea.in/
