The 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed, popularly known as Binani, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Her defection was confirmed on Sunday, July 20, by her media aide, Maulud Usman, who disclosed that the former senator quietly arrived in Yola on Saturday evening, July 19, and declared her switch to the ADC in the presence of close associates and allies.
“It wasn’t planned as an elaborate event, and there was no media invite, but the declaration has been made,” Usman explained. He added that a more formal event is being planned where Binani’s move and her future political direction will be publicly unveiled.
Binani, who represented Adamawa Central in the Senate from 2019 to 2023, made headlines in 2022 when she defeated five male contenders to secure the APC governorship ticket, becoming the first woman to achieve such a feat in the party. She ran a closely contested race in the 2023 governorship election but lost to incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Her surprise defection comes on the heels of unconfirmed reports that former Vice President and PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has also formally joined the ADC.
Sources indicate that the duo is expected to return to Yola next month for a major political gathering, where their alliance under the ADC will be officially launched.
