PSG dismantle Atletico 4-0 to launch Club World Cup bid in style

Paris Saint-Germain began their Club World Cup campaign in style, thrashing Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Rose Bowl in California to prove their title credentials.

The European champions dominated from start to finish, dictating the tempo in sweltering conditions and exploiting a lethargic Atletico side.

Fabián Ruiz opened the scoring with a powerful strike from the edge of the box in the 18th minute, before Vitinha doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time after a rapid counterattack.

Atletico’s only real chance of the half fell to Antoine Griezmann, but his tame effort was comfortably saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

After the break, PSG continued to control possession with ease, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at the heart of their creative play.

The Georgian winger struck the crossbar and registered two assists in a fine performance.

Julian Alvarez had a goal chalked off for a foul, but the third did eventually come via Senny Mayulu, who capitalized on a chaotic passage of play to fire home.

Atletico finished with 10 men after Clément Lenglet was dismissed for dissent following a controversial sequence that nearly gifted PSG a fourth.

The rout was completed when Lee Kang-in converted a stoppage-time penalty after a Robin Le Normand handball, capping a humbling night for Diego Simeone side.
