Peter Obi denies working with Abacha, sets record straight

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has categorically denied claims that he worked with the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Obi dismissed the allegation as baseless, stating that he never knew or met Abacha throughout his time in office. He emphasised that every aspect of his professional life has been open and verifiable.

The clarification comes on the heels of recent claims by Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, who accused Obi of being involved with the Abacha regime.

Addressing the issue, the former Anambra State governor explained that his only interaction with the federal government during Abacha’s rule was limited to efforts by business leaders to resolve a crisis at Nigerian ports.

Obi narrated that during Abacha’s administration, a policy led to significant congestion at the ports, halting the clearing and export of goods. In response, a group of private sector representatives, including himself, sought and secured an audience with the then Minister of Finance and the President.

“We explained the difficulties the business community was facing. The President directed the Finance Minister to form committees to decongest the ports and include some of us. I was part of that for about two to three weeks,” Obi said.

He further clarified that when the port decongestion transitioned into a reorganisation phase, he declined to continue, distancing himself from any permanent government role.

“I have never met Abacha. I don’t know him. Everything I have done in my life is in the public space,” Obi stressed.

Obi reiterated his commitment to transparency and public accountability, stating that any attempt to distort his record would be countered with facts.
