Jerry Moran is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the senior United States Senator from Kansas since 2011. He was born on May 29, 1954 in Great Bend, Kansas. After completing his high school education, he attended the University of Kansas, where he received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1976.
Moran went on to study at the University of Kansas School of Law and received his Juris Doctor in 1981. He then began practicing law in Hays, Kansas, and later became a partner in the law firm of Glassman, Bird & Powell.
In 1989, Moran was elected to the Kansas Senate, where he served until 1997. During his time in the state senate, he rose to the position of majority leader. In 1997, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing the 1st Congressional District of Kansas. He served seven terms in the House, from 1997 to 2011.
In 2010, Moran announced that his candidacy for the United States Senate seat had been vacated by outgoing Senator Sam Brownback. He won the Republican primary and defeated the Democratic candidate in the general election. He was re-elected to the Senate in 2016.
As a senator, Moran focused on issues related to agriculture, energy and health care. He was also a strong supporter of military and veterans issues.
