Former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a medical doctor named Dr. Obinna Obeta have been found guilty of organ trafficking in the United Kingdom.

Following a six-week trial at the Old Bailey, the trio were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain for the purpose of removing his organs. The 21-year-old Lagos street trader was brought to London with the intent of harvesting his kidney for their daughter.

The jury delivered the verdict on Thursday 23rd March 2023, with the judge, Justice Jeremy Johnson, postponing sentencing to a later date.

Ekweremadu, Beatrice, Sonia (their daughter), and Obeta were all standing trial for organ trafficking. This was the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act.
