Gospel singer ‘New Jerusalem’ passes away

Popular Benue gospel artist, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, known by his stage name New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53, sparking widespread mourning across the Christian community in Benue State and beyond.

Renowned for using Tiv Swange music as a tool for evangelism, New Jerusalem’s influence extended internationally.

The former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, led tributes during a condolence visit to the singer’s Makurdi residence. Ortom praised the late artist’s deep spirituality and global impact, recalling a moment in Australia where his music was used in a teaching session.

Ortom, who developed a personal bond with the family, promised continued support to both the family and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe.

In appreciation, the deceased’s elder brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named Ortom in honour of the former governor’s consistent support.

The late singer is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and several relatives. His burial will take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State.
