During the 2006–07 series, Rajan served as a backup presenter on The Wright Stuff, a daytime chat show on the Five network. He also worked on the software as a researcher.

In the following years, he worked as a reporter, sports journalist, columnist, comment editor and Independent Voices editor for The Independent newspaper, which he joined in August 2007.

In addition, he contributed to The Salisbury Review and wrote a Monday column for the London Evening Standard as well as restaurant reviews for The Independent on Sundays.

When Rajan’s Independent appointment was announced in 2013, aged 29, he made history as the first non-white editor of a national newspaper in more than a century.

Rajan would remain with the company to help with the shift in direction when The Independent owner Evgeny Lebedev announced a move to a digital-only model in February 2016. At that time, the print edition was to be discontinued.

Before taking over as editor of The Independent, Rajan served as a media advisor to Evgeny Lebedeva for nearly eighteen months. Yevgeny is the son of Alexander Lebedev, a former KGB economic attache.

Journalist Peter Oborne accused Rajan of practicing “clientelistic” and “crony” journalism during a program Rajan hosted for BBC Radio 2 in October 2019.

Rajan’s position as editor-at-large of The Independent ended on 12 December, when he was appointed the BBC’s first media editor in November 2016. He was also introduced to the BBC Asian Network’s Great Debate.

Since 2017, Rajan has filled in for a number of BBC Radio 2 presenters during the holidays, including Simon Mayo, Jeremy Vine and Zoe Ball.

The One Show was occasionally hosted by Rajan. He took over from Steve Hewlett as host of The Media Show on BBC Radio 4 in May 2017, but left the position in 2021 to join the Today team on BBC Radio 4.

It was announced that Rajan would replace Jeremy Paxman as host of University Challenge for the 53rd season in August 2022.

In December 2020, Rajan entered the competition and did not make it to Durham University. On July 17, 2023, he debuted in his new role as Question Master.
