12-year-old girl killed as police rescue 14 kidnap victims in Edo State shootout

A tragic event unfolded in Edo State on Friday night as a 12-year-old girl was fatally shot during a gun battle between security forces and suspected kidnappers in the Obe Hill area of Etsako East Local Government.

According to a statement released Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, SP Moses Yamu, the incident occurred after armed men believed to be kidnappers ambushed and blocked the Fugar-Agenebode Road, opening fire on unsuspecting motorists. Two people were killed on the spot, while others were taken hostage.

Following a distress call, a combined security team consisting of police officers, local vigilantes, and hunters swiftly mobilised to the area. A gun duel ensued near the pipeline route leading to Ajaokuta, during which 14 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued.

However, during the crossfire, a 12-year-old girl was struck and killed by bullets reportedly fired by the fleeing kidnappers. One female victim remains unaccounted for, with search efforts ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the rapid response and bravery of the security team. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and reassured the public that intensified operations are underway to track down and arrest the perpetrators.

“The Command extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and assures the general public that operations in the area have been intensified. Additional deployments have been made to prevent further attacks and track down the fleeing criminals,” the statement read.

The police urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely and credible information that could aid investigations and ongoing security efforts.
