A popular local radio DJ in Virginia found himself in the middle of a crime scene investigation — while allegedly committing a crime himself.

Brandon Stokes, 43, is best known as “Shaggy” in the Virginia Beach area where he hosts the morning show on Z104. Stokes is also the owner of a skating rink in the area, which he was reportedly trying to access on Wednesday morning, according to local NBC affiliate WAVY. At the same time Stokes was driving through the area, police were investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place, so the area was not accessible.

Stokes allegedly tried to drive through anyway — and he was allegedly drunk when police tried to stop him.

According to court documents obtained by WAVY, officers stopped Stokes while he was in his car at around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. They informed the DJ several times that he could not drive through the area because an investigation was underway. In response, Stokes reportedly became “belligerent” and spewed profanities at the officers, reportedly saying to them “You wanna bet?” when told he was not permitted to drive through the crime scene.

Local ABC affiliate WVEC reported that Stokes’ words were “slurred, incoherent and shouting” and he smelled of alcohol, according to an officer who spoke to him. Stokes was asked if he had been drinking that day, but it was not clear if he had a response to that.
