A woman asleep in the comfort of her bed in Missouri claims she was rudely awakened by a cascade of raccoons plummeting from a damaged ceiling — and now, in a civil lawsuit filed against her landlord, she is demanding accountability for the attack by the furry invaders.
Amanda Howery, of Kansas City, filed her petition for damages against SCI REI LLC and Sage Door Property Management LLC in the Jackson County Circuit Court on Aug. 16, according to publicly available court records. A summons to SCI and Sage Door Property Management LLC was formally issued on Aug. 19.
Howery is demanding at least $25,000 in damages.
“While Plaintiff was asleep in her bed, multiple raccoons fell through the damaged ceiling and attacked Plaintiff causing injuries,” the complaint states.
That “incident” at Howery’s rental home occurred in February 2023 and is the byproduct of what the woman says is neglect to the property including “an open hole in the roof, an unrepaired roof, compromised and/or damaged ceiling.”
Howery alleges that before the raccoons landed on her, she had no idea the conditions were so poor and that “no reasonable person” living in the unit would have been able to see this ceiling damage coming.
She has alleged two counts of negligence, arguing the rental companies “knew or should have known” the premises were dangerous.
Howery says the raccoon attack has resulted in medical expenses, disfigurement, and lost wages. She also claims she has suffered mental anguish and “past and future loss of enjoyment of life.”
An attorney for SCI and Sage Door did not immediately return a request for comment on Thursday to Law&Crime.
Court records show the next hearing in the case will not be until December.
